Project Book - Unfolding, Blooming, 2025

This book is more than a documentation. It reflects the processes, research, and encounters that shaped the project “Unfolding, Blooming”. It brings hidden stories into view: narratives of people living in foreign environments while developing new forms of identity and belonging. Through interviews and a sculptural perspective, the book connects individual experiences with collective memories and opens up new ways of perceiving public space.

The design of the book is inspired by the project’s central sculptural work. Visualizing the unfolding of unseen stories, the sculpture becomes a metaphor that is repeated through the medium of the book itself. As the pages unfold, the book reveals the stories Kim collected from the street, while also offering a deeper exploration of her interpretations, interventions, and insights.

Workshop & Brochure

When stories color the path : Boundless Stories of the Women, 2024

The workshop allows each participant to reveal their own stories, and these stories come together to show our diversity. The brochure produced as a result of the workshop documents the experiences and reflections of a three-day women's workshop exploring the themes of identity, connection and transformation. The workshop was not only a space for sharing stories and creating art, but also a collective journey through memories, dreams and aspirations.

This brochure captures these profound moments and the collaborative spirit of the workshop. It highlights the symbolic significance of colour, the influence of relationships and the intertwining of individual and collective journeys. Featuring vibrant artwork, poignant stories and the voices of participants, it serves as both a record and an inspiration - a reminder that our journeys, while unique, are enriched by the people we encounter and the stories we share.

Workshop

Our Stories Know No Borders: Children's Workshop at FrauenBUNT, 2024

This workshop was created for children. Through Kims sculptural language, she reflects on how we form relationships within society and how we share our stories with one another. More than simply engaging in sculptural play, the workshop focused on how individual elements can connect, unfold, and intertwine, creating moments of exchange and interaction.

Over the course of three days, the workshop developed into an artistic exploration, with each day centered around a different theme. These explorations ultimately reflected on the idea of living together and coexisting within a shared community.

Workshop & Dialogue & Brochure

When the path is no longer foreign :
Dialog with five Korean women, 2023

This brochure is the result of a workshop with five Korean women who engaged with their identity as Koreans. The participants, aged between forty and seventy, portrayed the history of Korean-German immigrant generations through conversations, answers to questionnaires and drawings. The intensity and passion of their lives leave a strong impression. We meet as if by chance on the journey of life, share stories, and our paths are no longer foreign to each other.

Dialogue & Brochure

Interview with Meiro Koizumi, 2022

An interview brochure with the Japanese artist Meiro Koizumi, in which I asked him about the influence of place on his identity and his ideals as an artist. He primarily deals with the effects of war on society. As a son, he also talks a lot about his relationship with his father. This book was created as part of the “Smile, Smile” project. It provides honest answers from an artist on questions about place and identity.

Project Book - Smile, Smile, 2022

This project book documents the development of "Smile, Smile", Hye Hyun Kim’s first sculptural project in Germany. Beginning with the discovery of two identical smiley graffiti on a street, the project explores the intersection of place, identity and form. Through abstract and graphic representations, the shape of the street itself is bent and twisted to form letters that, when assembled, spell the Korean word for 'smile, smile'.

The sculptures, undefined and dynamic, adapt to their surroundings and challenge traditional notions of sculpture. The book captures the journey of these living, moving sculptures over two years as they were exhibited in various locations and interacted with their surroundings. One particularly curious episode is recounted: a stranger took a piece home to use as a table decoration, a moment that became part of the project's narrative and is shared through a short interview in the book.

This book offers an intimate look at the conceptual underpinnings of the project, its playful yet profound engagement with space, and its reflection on questions of identity and art. It is both a record of the work and an invitation to contemplation:  What is a sculpture? Who am I? Where am I going?
